How to Preserve a Bouquet Forever: 5 Flower Preservation Methods

How to Preserve a Bouquet Forever: 5 Flower Preservation Methods

Flowers carry memories. From wedding bouquets to anniversary blooms, each petal tells a story. But what can we do when those petals begin to fade? As someone who’s been preserving flowers since 2015, I’ve explored many ways to keep their beauty alive. Today, I’m sharing five preservation methods — and a closer look at the one I use daily in my studio: epoxy resin preservation.

1. Air Drying

What it is: Hanging flowers upside down in a dark, dry place.
Pros: Simple and cost-free.
Cons: Flowers become fragile and lose color.

2. Pressing Flowers

What it is: Pressing blooms between book pages or using a flower press.
Pros: Ideal for cards or framed art.
Cons: The flower’s 3D shape is lost completely.

3. Silica Gel Drying

What it is: Using silica gel crystals to dry flowers while preserving their shape and color.
Pros: Great color retention.
Cons: Requires patience and materials.

4. Freeze-Drying

What it is: A professional process using freezing and vacuum-drying.
Pros: Natural results, long-lasting.
Cons: Very expensive and not DIY-friendly.

5. Resin Preservation – My Signature Technique

What makes my method unique?

  • I don’t just pour resin — I paint with it. I call my approach “Creative Resin Painting”. Each petal is coated by hand, layer by layer, to preserve its original structure and soul.
  • I listen to the flower. Every bloom is different. Its moisture level, petal thickness, and pigments tell me how to dry it. Sometimes I start with a professional temperature-controlled dehydrator, then finish drying in silica gel — a process that can take days but is essential for perfect preservation.
  • Perfect drying is key. Any moisture left in the flower can ruin the resin result. That’s why I’ve developed a multi-step method, adjusted for each flower type, to ensure every piece is flawless.

I preserved everything in resin: from flowers to crabs and bugs. Preserving flowers in resin is part science, part passion. Since 2015, I’ve been refining this craft—transforming fading petals into lasting keepsakes.

Behind the Scenes: Drying Peonies from a Bridal Bouquet

Here’s a real example of how I dried peonies from a recent bride’s bouquet using my custom method — combining a dehydrator and silica gel drying for perfect results.

The peonies, despite their creamy-white appearance, harbored a subtle pink hue. Even after drying, the pink tint remains visible. The peonies held their shape with not a petal lost.

A few buds from the bouquet also dried perfectly, they always need longer drying, since they have more leaves that are not opened, and the center of the buds, if not dried well, can start rotting processes.

Final Thoughts

Flowers may fade, but memories can last. Choose the preservation method that feels right for you — and if you want something truly special, let’s create art together in resin.
